Air pollution has been tied to various illnesses, including Alzheimer’s. But Trump wants more of it.

Air pollution has been tied to several health problems, including Alzheimer's. A recent study by Lancaster University showed very high levels of magnetite particles, or iron oxide, in the brains of people with Alzheimer's, as compared to those without the disease. The "smooth and spherical" nature of these particles strongly suggests that they do not occur naturally in the brain, but rather come in from high-temperature outside sources such as car engines and power stations [1].

Alzheimer's is just one of the many reasons the American government has to work hard at keeping pollution levels down. Aside from environmental concerns, the health and the lives of our citizens are now at stake.

President Trump claims he cares about air pollution and pledged to "work very, very hard on clean air," but he's cutting funds from the Environmental Protection Agency and rolling back Obama-era regulations meant to protect our planet and the air we breathe [2].

Trump's Environmental Protection Agency head, Scott Pruitt, tried to overturn a regulation on mercury pollution from coal plants and has filed a lawsuit against the EPA regional haze rule, which requires cleaner air near national parks. He also opposes the 2011 cross-state air pollution rule, which forces 27 states to limit the smog that affects down-wind states [2].

According to CNN, Trump has "promoted a return to the dirty fossil-fuel era with a proposed 'America First Energy Plan,'" which would cut climate change programs significantly and harm our air [3]. He has ordered a repeal of the Clean Power Plan, Obama's proposed chlopyrifos pesticide ban, the requirement for oil and gas companies to report their emissions, and more [4]. There's also some concern he may overturn the decades-old Clean Air Act [5].

Air pollution is harming not only our environment but also our bodies and minds, and it needs to be stopped. Sign the petition below to tell President Trump, Congress, and the US Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources that our air should be protected, not ruined for the sake of the greedy.

The Petition:

Dear President Trump, Congress, and the US Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources,

You have the opportunity to protect people from needlessly developing diseases like Alzheimer's. You do not have to choose between a financially healthy country and a physically healthy citizenry. Stop helping big businesses thrive and start focusing on what you can do to stop those industries from harming human lives and the world we live in.

Every citizen of this great nation has the right to breathe clean air, and we need you do more to protect this right, rather than eliminate it for the sake of a "level playing field" for greedy businesses [6].

We demand that you halt the attacks on our air. Don't cut EPA funding or roll back the Clean Air Act and other Obama-era regulations meant to keep the air clean and people healthy.
